# Schloss Moritzburg — what the ticket buys in which season, the three-week November gap, the Cinderella winter exhibition, and how to get out from Dresden > Schloss Moritzburg is a baroque hunting palace on an artificial island in a lake, about 15 km north of Dresden in Saxony. Duke Moritz of Saxony built a hunting lodge here between 1542 and 1546; Augustus the Strong had Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and Zacharias Longuelune remodel it as a country seat between 1723 and 1733, flooding four smaller ponds into the one that surrounds it. It is the castle of the 1973 film Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella, and it runs a winter exhibition about that film. The baroque exhibition runs 20 March to 1 November 2026, daily 10:00-18:00, last entry 16:45. The castle then shuts completely from 2 to 19 November 2026. The winter exhibition Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella opens on 20 November 2026 and runs to 28 February 2027, daily 09:30-17:30, last entry 16:15. Both exhibitions cost the same. - 2026 admission: 12 euros full, 10 euros reduced, 4.50 euros for children aged 6 to 16, 10 euros a head for groups of 15 or more. The baroque ticket includes a HistoPad tablet. The same figures apply to the Cinderella exhibition. - Combined tickets: castle and Fasanenschlösschen 15 euros full, 12 reduced, 7 for children; castle and Käthe Kollwitz Haus 16 euros full, 13 reduced, 6 for children. - Closed days inside the winter season: 24 and 31 December 2026, and 7, 8, 11, 18 and 25 January, 1 and 22 February 2027. - THE CASTLE'S OWN TICKET IS NOT SOLD ON GETYOURGUIDE. There is no Moritzburg admission listing on the platform. Two of the six listings this site compares carry a castle ticket as part of a day trip: activity 51900 from Dresden, which names the castle entry in its inclusions at seven euros a head, and activity 1110172 from Prague, which sells a Zwinger-and-Moritzburg ticket pair. - The Fasanenschlösschen, the Little Pheasant Castle, is a separate building in the park, built 1770-1776. It opens 30 April to 1 November 2026, Thursday to Sunday 10:30-15:30, and it can only be entered on a guided tour at 11:00, 12:15 or 14:00, maximum ten people per tour. It costs 8 euros full, 7 reduced, 4.50 for children. Beside it stand a miniature harbour and a painted brick lighthouse 21.8 metres high. - Inside the castle: the Federzimmer, whose bed and wall hangings carry roughly a million peacock, pheasant, guinea fowl and duck feathers woven into canvas, bought by Augustus the Strong in 1723, moved to Moritzburg in 1830 and back on show since 2003 after a 19-year restoration; and the dining room's 71 antler trophies, most of them between 270 and 400 years old, including the heaviest red deer antler in the world at 19.8 kilograms and nearly 2 metres across. - Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella, the 1973 Czech-German film, was shot here. The winter exhibition shows original costumes, recreated film scenes, multimedia staging and the original riding saddle Cinderella sat on. A replica of the golden shoe stands on the outer staircase where the shoe is lost in the film; it was moulded to the actress Libuše Šafránková's foot, which is why it is long, narrow and fits almost nobody. - Getting there: the castle is 15 km from Dresden. Bus line 477 runs from Dresden-Neustadt towards Radeburg and stops at Moritzburg Schloss, a few minutes' walk away. The other way is the S1 to Radebeul Ost and then the Lößnitzgrundbahn narrow-gauge steam railway, which runs to Moritzburg station. By car it is the A4 exit Dresden-Wilder Mann or the A13 exit Radeburg. - Parking: the main car park at Schlossallee 2 is paid and open around the clock; Radeburger Straße and Kalkreuther Straße are paid; the Waldschänke and Fasanengarten car park is free. - History: Duke Moritz of Saxony built the hunting lodge between 1542 and 1546. Augustus the Strong had it remodelled as a baroque country seat between 1723 and 1733 by Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and Zacharias Longuelune, and the artificial island was made by flooding four smaller ponds into one. ## Which month you come, and who drives The first decision at Moritzburg is not which tour to book, it is which month you arrive in, because the castle swaps its entire contents twice a year at the same price: baroque rooms until 1 November, nothing at all for about three weeks, and the Cinderella film exhibition from 20 November to the end of February. The second decision is the journey, and that is the part the platform actually sells. You cannot: there is no admission listing for this castle on the platform. What is sold there is the journey out from Dresden, Prague or Berlin, and only two of those listings include a castle ticket. - Moritzburg is in Dresden. It is not: it is a village about 15 km north of the city, and every visit needs a bus, the steam railway or a car. - The castle is open all year. It is not quite: it closes completely for about three weeks between the baroque season ending on 1 November and the Cinderella exhibition opening on 20 November, and there are single closed days inside the winter season. - The winter exhibition is a Christmas market or a cheaper add-on. It is neither: it replaces the baroque exhibition entirely, at the same price, and while it is on you cannot see the baroque rooms. - You can try the golden shoe on.
