Castles near Dresden

The short version: Schloss Moritzburg is the one this site knows, 15 km north of the city on an island in a lake, and it is the only building I am going to describe properly, because it is the only one I have checked. What I can give you instead is what the six listings actually reach: Moritzburg, the Dresden Zwinger, Meißen and its porcelain works, and Schloss Wackerbarth with its vineyards.

Coming out from Dresden? The castle sells its own admission at its own counter, so what is worth booking ahead is the ride: a guided day that carries the ticket for you, or a car from Prague. Every one of them cancels free up to 24 hours before, and one of the six is Moritzburg and nothing else.

Why this page is short

Saxony has plenty of castles and I have not stood in most of them with a notebook. Reprinting a list of names and opening times I cannot vouch for would make this page longer and worse. What I know about Moritzburg is this: 15 km north of Dresden, on an artificial island, open 20 March to 1 November for the baroque exhibition, shut entirely 2 to 19 November, and holding the Cinderella exhibition from 20 November to 28 February at the same price. What is inside it.

What the listings actually reach

The one in the same park

If you want a second building on the same day out, it is the Fasanenschlösschen, a few minutes’ walk from the castle in its own park, with a miniature harbour and a painted lighthouse beside it. Guided tours only, thirty places a day, Thursday to Sunday, in season. That is a real constraint and it is the reason people miss it.

The castle sells its own admission at its own counter and on schloss-moritzburg.de. There is no Moritzburg entry ticket on GetYourGuide, so nothing on this site is a substitute for that counter. What the platform sells is the journey, and two of the six listings that reach Moritzburg carry a castle ticket inside the day: the guided day from Dresden and the private Prague car that pairs Moritzburg with the Zwinger.

The day that strings several of them together

Six hours by van from Dresden: Schloss Wackerbarth and the vineyards, Meißen, and half an hour at Moritzburg for the outside. around eighty-four euros a person, narrated in German, no admissions included, and no rating on the platform yet. It is a good way to see the country and a poor way to see this castle. The six compared.
